What did i take from it:

-Debate of Contemporary Photography.

-Inside Position, Understanding the subject and/or their situation

-Outside Position, Alienating and isolating the subject and exagerate the distance between them the social norm.

-The 'Other'.

Ideas:

After reading into Diana Arbus and her Outside Position where she used forms of aienation isolating and distancing people from the social norm i think i want to experiment and read into this 'Outside' position further and incorporate it into my own work.

To start with I have looked into the image 'The Twins' by Diana Arbus (shown above) to gain inspiration for my brief. Although Abigail Solomon-Godeau claimed that Diana Arbus was an outsider, personally i do not agree that she was. Looking at her images I would class her more of an Inside photographer this is due to how she has placed her subjects. In her image 'The Twins, Arbus has shot them both outside in the public doing what other members of the norm would do, proving that they have normal regular lives like the rest of us, therefore how is she distancing them from reality?

Like Arbus' photograph of 'The Twins' her image 'The Jewish Giant' in my view also rejects claims that she was an outsider. Other photographers who shot Eddie Carmel used specific angles and positions to create the illusion he is taller than he actually is, alienating him, making him appear like as a 'Freak'. Arbus in my eyes did the opposite to the other photographer, she shot Carmel next to other people to show him actual height not the height photographers make him out to be.

In conclusion I feel like I want to find a way in which I can actually objectify my subjects and take a outsider approach: this will need to be researched into further.
